The Nashua River watershed is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. The NRWA and the Pepperell Conservation Commission invite the public to attend a free “Wild Edibles Walk” on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., in Pepperell, MA.  Join expert forager Russ Cohen, author of Wild Plants I Have Known...and Eaten, on a two-hour ramble at Nissitissit Meadows, 63 acres of town-owned conservation land boasting rolling agricultural fields, ponds, forested wetlands, floodplain, and Nissitissit River frontage.  Participants will learn tips for identifying wild edibles, seasons of availability, flavor and nutritive value, and preparation methods, along with guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.

Russ has been featured on NPR’s “Here and Now”, and in Massachusetts Wildlife Magazine, Yankee Magazine and Edible Boston Magazine.  Together with pursuing his passion for gathering, eating and teaching people about wild edible plants, Russ also aspires to become a “Johnny Appleseed” for native edible species.  His goal is to more than match what he “takes,” in the form of edible nuts, berries, etc., with what he “gives,” in the form of propagating and planting edible native species, and assisting and partnering with others in this endeavor.

For the comfort of all, dogs are not allowed. This walk is free and open to the public; pre-registration is required.  The exact meeting location and directions will be provided upon registration. To pre-register and receive directions, or for more information, please contact Wynne Treanor-Kvenvold at the NRWA at (978) 448-0299, or This email address is being protected from spambots.
