Marion Stoddart presents The Nashua River

Citizen activist and NRWA founder Marion Stoddart engages students in active discussion about the river's history, the importance of creating and preserving a greenway, and how students can make a difference.

The Nashua River Watershed: How does it work?

Students will manipulate a physical watershed model and discover how nonpoint source pollution - polluted runoff - affects waterways in the Nashua River watershed. We will discuss watershed protection methods and how land use affects water quality. Students will also create their own watershed models using a variety of interesting materials.

1.5 hours
Grades 3 - 12
10-35 students
$5.00 per student

River Creatures of the Nashua

Explore the underwater life of the Nashua River! Using specialized equipment, students will capture, observe, identify and release aquatic insects and other river creatures along the river's banks. The students will learn how these creatures have adapted to their habitats and how these animals serve as important indicators of water quality.

Forest Ecology in the Watershed

How does a forest affect the river? Students make connections between the two environments as they learn about local trees and plants that support the river's greenway. Activities include identifying and quantifying species on the NRWA Nature Trail.

Shoreline Survey: Exploring and Mapping a River

Get your hands wet at the first level of water quality monitoring! Using scientific approach to a true shoreline survey, students explore a stretch of the river from its banks, record data, and map its characteristics and conditions.
