Environmental education is needed because people's willingness to work together depends on their understanding of the ecosystem, with its human and natural interconnections. Ultimately we will only protect what we love, and we only love what we understand. - The 2020 Plan Throughout the year, the NRWA conducts numerous watershed education programs for both youth and adults. Youth Programs The NRWA works with schools throughout the watershed to offer a variety of programs all designed to promote active, science-based learning. Programs can take place either in the classroom, schoolyard, or in the form of field trips making use of local water resources (the Nashua River, the Squannacook River, ponds or marshes near the school).
For a complete list of programs, please see In the Classroom, Schoolyard, Library, or Park, On the Nashua River and Tributaries, or At the NRWA's River Resource Center. The NRWA's youth program content is linked to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and staff will work with groups to ensure that programs fit your individual learning objective. Our programs explore the river's unique cultural and natural history by engaging students in experiences that promote active, science-based learning and discovery. The River Resource Center and the nearby Nashua River have become the field trip destination for over one thousand watershed students, chaperones, and teachers each spring and fall. One of the NRWA's field trip options, River Classroom, allows children to learn about their local river environment by canoeing the river. The NRWA can tailor a program for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, after-school programs, home schoolers, and other youth groups. At the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) we believe that students learn best by active participation. All of our programs encourage students to become involved with the river and the land around it by observing, collecting data, summarizing findings, and developing hypotheses. Both teachers and students have fun learning about the natural world, while also acting as scientists.
