For the 2008 Water Quality Monitoring season, volunteers will test water samples at the Pepperell Wastewater Treatment Plant and the EarthTech Water Treatment Facility at Devens.

From the South (directions from NRWA center):

  • From Rt. 119 in Groton, turn onto Rt 111/River Road.
  • In Pepperell, enter roundabout and take 2nd exit onto Rt. 111/Hollis Street.
  • After 0.7 miles, follow Rt. 111 (now Nashua Road) by taking sharp right turn.
  • After 0.6 miles, turn right into Lomar Park.
  • Follow road around to the left until you see the treatment plant.
  • Enter gates and drive to farthest building.
  • Lab is on the left side of the building in door marked "Lab".

From the North (Groton):

  • From Rt. 119 in Groton, take Rt. 111 South in the center of Groton.
  • You will pass Groton School on the right.
  • Follow Rt. 111 to Rt. 2A at stop sign (Tiny's Diner will be on your right).
  • Make a right onto Rt. 2A (west).
  • Continue 2 miles on Rt. 2A (you'll pass over the Nashua River) until you see Walker Road on your left.
  • Turn left onto Walker Road.
  • Follow Walker Road 1.1 miles, and end at 85 Walker Road in Shirley. Look for Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge sign on LEFT.
  • There will be an EarthTech Wastewater Treatment Plant sign and mailbox.
  • Turn left onto dirt driveway.
  • See directions below for "Once on Dirt Road".

From the North (Route 2A-shirley/Townsend):

  • Traveling east on Route 2A, take a right onto Walker Road, 1.7 miles after the Bull Run Restaurant (at intersection of Rte. 2A and Townsend Road).
  • Follow Walker Road 1.1 miles, and end at 85 Walker Road in Shirley. Look for Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge sign on LEFT.
  • There will be an EarthTech Wastewater Treatment Plant sign and mailbox.
  • Turn left onto dirt driveway.
  • Follow from below “Once on Dirt Road”.

Once on Dirt Road:

  • Follow driveway in about 100 yards, then bear RIGHT (follow sign).
  • Follow road as it bears LEFT (through yellow gate) and you'll go straight up hill (on asphalt now) to the farthest brick building- around back to the door leading to the laboratory.

From the South- Devens Verbeck Gate (2 options):

Option #1- If McPherson Road is open:

  • Travel directly across Main Street from Verbeck Gate to McPherson Road (the Nashua River will be on your left).
  • At bend in road (sign for former Moore airfield) proceed straight.
  • Take first left in front of small brick building.
  • Cross the Nashua River on narrow metal bridge.
  • Proceed straight 1/8th of a mile, go through yellow iron gate on right, and up paved hill.
  • At the top of the hill, drive to the farthest brick building-around back to the door leading to the laboratory.

Option #2- If McPherson Road is closed due to flooding, etc.:

  • Take left out of Verbeck Gate onto West Main Street.
  • Drive over the Nashua River.
  • Take first right onto Walker Road.
  • Go about 1 mile to Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge sign (85 Walker Road).
  • There will also be an EarthTech Wastewater Treatment Plant sign and mailbox.
  • Take a right onto dirt driveway.
  • See directions above for "Once on Dirt Road".

From the East (Ayer) on West Main Street:

  • Drive west from the center of Ayer towards Shirley on West Main Street.
  • After you cross over the Nashua River, take a right onto Walker Road.
  • Go about 1 mile to Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge sign (85 Walker Road).
  • There will also be an EarthTech Wastewater Treatment Plant sign and mailbox.
  • Take a right onto dirt driveway.
  • See directions above for "Once on Dirt Road".

From the West (Shirley) on Ayer Road:

  • Follow Ayer Road east from downtown Shirley towards Ayer.
  • Just before you go over the Nashua River, turn left onto Walker Road (if you go past Ice House Dam Partners and into the Town of Ayer, you’ve gone too far)
  • Go about 1 mile to Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge sign (85 Walker Road).
  • There will also be an EarthTech Wastewater Treatment Plant sign and mailbox.
  • Take a right onto dirt driveway.
