Our wetlands, rivers, and forests have provided habitat for turtles, including some state-listed endangered and species of special concern. Register today to join us for our free in-person presentation on “Turtles of the Nashua River Watershed” with Michela Coury, MassWildlife Freshwater Turtle Biologist, to learn more about the turtles that make their homes here.
Michela Coury will speak about the habits and habitats of our local freshwater turtles – during this presentation, you will learn how to identify our native turtle species, what types of turtle sightings should be reported to wildlife officials, their diet, and when they typically nest. She will also discuss what makes a healthy habitat for turtles, and ways that turtles may be impacted by climate change. Michela will discuss how we can support our turtle populations both individually and as a community, including interactions during nesting season and what to do when we encounter turtles crossing busy roads or injured animals.
Michela is our State’s Freshwater Turtle Biologist, and works directly with the State Herpetologist on turtle habitat and population management, field surveys, and head starting programs. She holds both Masters and Bachelors degrees in Conservation Biology and has done extensive work with freshwater turtles and aquatic ecosystems in the Midwest and Southeast United States.
