How many kinds of bees can you name: honey bees, bumble bees, sweat bees perhaps? Most people are familiar with our non-native honey bees and their role in pollinating commercial crops, but few are aware of the great diversity of native bees that we have in our region and the roles that they play in pollinating our indigenous plants.
Our presenter, local bee enthusiast and researcher Michael Veit, will talk about the other bees, their diversity, beauty, importance, and fascinating life histories. Learn about the contrasting life styles of species that are flower generalists, flower specialists, and even bees that are nest parasites of other bees.
Michael is the lead author of a 2022 publication “A Checklist of Bees of Massachusetts” which documents close to 400 species of bees known from the state. He also successfully nominated all five bee species currently included in the Massachusetts list of Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern Species. Prior to his retirement Michael taught biology at Lawrence Academy for 20 years.
