A great way to get involved with the NRWA is through volunteering for our upcoming Adopt-a-River Program. Invasive Water Chestnut (Trapa natans) is a serious threat to the ecology of waterways across the Northeast, including right here in the Nashua River watershed. This summer, teams of interested volunteers with access to the canoes, kayaks, and other small watercraft are invited to adopt certain high risk segments of the Nashua River to scout for and hand pull chestnut plants. Volunteers are asked to commit to visiting their adopted section 2 or 3 times throughout the summer growing season (June to mid August). Interested boaters can view our Adopt-a-River Program Guidebook for more information, including tips on safety best practices and water chestnut removal techniques.
