Squan-a-tissit Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU) leads this hands-on, full day Learn to Fly Fish Workshop, a no pressure beginner’s class with the opportunity to learn all the basics from experienced instructors. This is a wonderful way to explore this popular recreational activity.
Classroom and lunch to be held at the Nashua River Watershed Association, River Resource Center, 592 Main Street (Rt. 119) in Groton, MA. In-field fishing will be at a nearby location in Pepperell.
Hands-on classroom: 9:00 am to Noon
Lunch (provided by NRWA): Noon to 12:45 pm
In-field fishing: 1:00 to 3:00 pm
The workshop will cover:
- What equipment you need, including setup and care
- Important fishing knots with hands-on practice
- How to cast with practice time
- Local fish species, what makes good habitat, and fishing locations
- State fishing rules and regulations
What you need to bring with you:
- Eye protection. This can be your regular prescription glasses, sunglasses, or a pair protective glasses.
- A valid Massachusetts fishing license if you wish to participate in the afternoon fishing on the Nissitissit River. You can apply online at https://massfishhunt.mass.gov/login
Included in the day:
- All equipment, tools, and gear is provided by TU for attendees to use for the day of the workshop; exception is waders. Attendees can bring their own if they have a pair, but waders are not essential as you can fish from the bank.
- Lunch, as well as morning coffee and refreshments, will be provided by the NRWA.
The workshop is limited to 10 attendees to ensure a great instructor to student ratio. Attendees must be at least 12 years old; students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or other adult guardian. Please no large group registrations, i.e. youth or scout groups, outdoor clubs. Such groups should reach out to program staff to make arrangements for their own presentation.
