Townsend Flooding Reduction Project: Townsend Resident Input Needed

The Town of Townsend has been awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program to tackle flooding impacts head-on.

The Townsend project team needs your help! Community input is vital to the success of this project. 

1. Please respond to the online Townsend Flood Reduction Survey today. The survey will provide the project team with firsthand information on flooding experiences across Townsend. The survey is brief and easy to complete from the comfort of your own home or office at your convenience. Responses are needed by Wednesday, January 29th.


2. Mark your calendar and plan to attend the Winter Workshop on Thursday, February 6, from 6:00 to 7:00pm at the Townsend Public Library.  This workshop provides an opportunity for community discussion of flooding concerns and ways that you can help to reduce flooding. Children are welcome to attend and will have their own activity. Refreshments will be provided.

What this project means for Townsend:
– A comprehensive stormwater infrastructure inventory, looking at culverts and stream crossings
– Development of flood reduction solutions, including Nature-based Solutions and green infrastructure strategies (click on the links if you want to learn more about this!)
– A plan for improved stormwater management to protect our local watershed

Water is at the heart of all that the Nashua River Watershed Association does, and understanding the science of hydrology– how water moves through our watershed- is essential to our work. Winter Sowing: Get a Head Start on Your Spring Garden

Jan. 22 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the NRWA River Resource Center

Winter sowing is a way to get a head start on your garden by planting seeds outdoors in the winter in order to develop healthy seedlings ready for planting in spring. You can winter sow many types of plants including perennials, vegetables, and herbs. This presentation will focus on the winter sowing of native perennials. Registration required; register online.

NRWA Storytime at Groton Public Library

January 13 from 10:30 to 11:00 am at the Groton Public Library

NRWA Education Director Gaynor Bigelbach visits the Groton Public Library to read aloud two of Amy MacDonald’s charming picture books about Little Beaver, and lead a simple craft project. For children under age 5.

How Animals Prepare for Winter

Join the fun of this winter solstice program at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge’s Bill Ashe Visitor Facility. Appropriate for ages 8 and up. Registration required.
