Water Science and Protection

Clean water is a human right, and the foundation for all life on our planet. The Nashua River, once one of the most polluted rivers in the nation, was restored through efforts led by the NRWA. Today, much of the Nashua River, and all of the Squannacook and Nissitissit Rivers, are designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The primary goal of the NRWA is to continue to protect and advocate for clean water to help ensure healthy communities for people and enduring ecosystems for wildlife.

Water Monitoring

Monitoring water quality parameters, like bacteria and nutrient levels, and recording streamside observations, such as streamflow, creates a scientific foundation of data that can be used to identify issues to be addressed.

PFAS and Other Hazards

Assessing and taking action to address significant threats to our water quality, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), mercury, and harmful algal blooms, helps to protect human health and the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Stream and Riparian Restoration

Working with local communities to address issues with man-made impediments to stream connectivity, such as dams and culverts, can lead to improved water quality and aquatic wildlife habitat, as well as reducing threats to our communities during climate related extreme weather events. Additionally, restoring degraded streambanks creates healthy greenway which will filter polluted runoff, and create wildlife habitat.

Aquatic Invasives

Managing aquatic invasives protects the health of aquatic ecosystems and improves recreational opportunities.
